Professor Shailey Minocha

Profile summary

Professional biography

Shailey Minocha is a Professor in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at The Open University, UK.

Shailey has expertise in the design and evaluation of:

  • digital learning resources for training, continuing professional development (CPD), and for distributed working;
  • immersive technologies such as virtual reality including avatar-based virtual worlds, and augmented reality for student learning and engagement;
  • immersive storytelling in virtual reality for social impact such as social inclusion and for generating empathy; and
  • user-facing software systems with a particular focus on usability, user experience and service design based on the digital skills of the end-users and the contexts-of-use.

Research interests

Shailey has studied diverse contexts in emerging online domains: how website design influences purchasing behavior; how social software supports research dialogues; how blogs and wikis can promote reflective learning and support globally distributed software development teams; how online social interactions can offset social isolation and loneliness in older people; how activity monitoring technologies can help improve physical well-being; how virtual reality can provide authentic field trip experiences; how virtual reality can be employed for social inclusion and for generating empathy; and how to design 3D spaces in virtual worlds that exploit the artificial while relating to reality.

OU research tackles social isolation An action plan to tackle social isolation and loneliness among older citizens in Milton Keynes is being created based on research by The Open University. The research project by Open University academics in collaboration with the charity Age UK Milton Keynes, has recently concluded with a series of recommendations which range from ring-fencing social isolation resources, to mapping local 'loneliness hotspots'. The project report, Social isolation and loneliness in people aged 55 and over in Milton Keynes, says that isolation and loneliness is a public health issue, and reducing it will reduce the burden on health and social services. Lack of social interaction is linked to serious illnesses including depression, high blood pressure and dementia, and can be as bad for health as smoking.
